War Trash Book Review

Plot: A Chinese nationalist stayed with the communists after the nationalist's defeat and was sent to fight alongside the north Korean's army by the Chinese government. This book is mainly about the author's struggle with the war. When he was sent to the Yalu river, he experienced life never experienced before. And he was also shocked at the damages that a war can inflict on innocent civilians.

During his stay there, he befriended a North Korean soldier and they remained as very good friends during the war. They fought together, slept together and encouraged each other when times were difficult. However, during a battle with the enemy, a terrible incident happened. His friend died while trying to save him from a bullet. From this incident onwards, he hated the U.S soldiers so much that he had these words "F** US" tattoed on his arm and swore to avenge his friend.

He eventually did so by coming up with a brilliant tactic to counter attack the U.S troops. Knowing very well that the Yalu river is a source of water for the U.S troops, he told his commander to block the river current using sand bags so that the current would appear less strong and hence more of the U.S troops will think it is safe to bathe 1there. Then, when the river is full of the U.S troops, they will then release the sand bags and let the strong current to gush down and wash the U.S troops along with it. This plot of his took many U.S soldiers lives and coupled with other smaller victories, the Chinese and North Korean armies eventually drove the U.S and South Korean troops out of North Korea. It was a total victory for the Chinese and the North Koreans.

The two sides finally reached a stalemate condition and both sides agreed to a ceasefire to stop further damages being caused. Delighted at the news, the author knew that he can finally return home to see his elderly mother. However, upon reaching home, he was sad to learn that his mother had just died two days before the war ended and her last words was that she wanted the author to carry on the family line for the family. The author was totally heartbroken by this fact. He then gave his mother a grand funeral so that she can rest in peace.

According to his mother's last wish, he married and had two children. Eventually and ironically, his whole family moved to the U.S because of his children's education. He never told anyone about his tattoo and kept this secret to himself and his wife only. Not even his children knew. Now that his children had all grown up, he decided to return to his homeland with his wife to spend the rest of their life there.

Task 2

)Point of View

Point: It is from a soldier who had been diagnosed with unexplained health illnesses, he was angry with the America which used different Agents in the Vietnam war.

Evidence: 1) "America did not foresee"
2) "Green, pink, purple and other colors death potpourri!"
3) "Now thinking twice?"

Elaboration: The above three evidences shown that the poet who is a solder was angry with the American who had used Agent Orange during the war. The poet thinks that the American did not bother to care about the future with the use of Agent Orange. They did not care how those Agents is going to affect other's health, they just want to win the war because of their selfishness. The American should have think twice before launching the attack, they should have think of the consequences and the damages the Agent Orange will cause.

2) Situation and Setting

Point: Sad

Evidence: 1) "Toll on the innocent and unborn,"
2) "Generations untold WILL pay"

Elaboration: The setting of this poem is rather sad as tension is built up by showing how the future generations of Vietnam will suffer the consequences of Agent Orange. Many future generations will also suffer from the attack of Agent Orange as the diseases might passed down from generations to another generations. Hence, the consequences are very serious.

3) Language/Diction
The title of this poem is ironical. Rainbow also stands for happiness and joy, but in this poem no happiness was shown. Instead, fear, anger and suffering was shown in it. Strong words like deceit and nefariously are used in the poem too. This shows that the poet thinks that America is a cruel country that uses terrible and cruel means to win the war, not even thinking of the consequences.

4) Personal Response
I fell sorry for the soldiers who had suffered those illnesses from the war. The poet tells me how countries use different cruel methods just for the sake of winning a war.It was because of their selfishness that led to such consequences.

Task 1 ( Rainbow Death Poem )

Poet Introduction

He was a Vietnam War veteran (as his four brothers) who served in the USAF Security Service. He, along with a dozen or so intelligence school grads, prepped for about 14 months at Kelly AFB in San Antonio, Texas, before anticipating being sent to Vietnam or elsewhere in southeat Asia in 1970. About half ended up in Da Nang (an Agent Orange hotspot) in the 6924th Security Squadron. The rest of them were assigned to Shemya Island, Alaska, with the 6984th Security Squadron, and what eventually was a MORE contaminated environment than Da Nang! His health problems started approximately 15 years ago with unexplained headaches and limb pains. Four years ago his central nervous system radically deteriorated with Parkinsonian type tremors, severe headaches, progressive limb pains, etc. No physician has ever diagnosed the specific illness. NO VA physician has ever rendered ANY medical assistance! His number one educated guess is the heavily contaminated drinking water at Shemya during his year there as an intelligence analyst. Organo-phosphate toxins may not run their toxic course until 20 to 30 years after initial exposure. Since his brain still functions moderately well (and he have mobility issues), he have turned to writing just like his late Father and the late singer (and writer) Johnny Cash.

Background
This small poem speaks of a modern day ingredient of warfare that has caused appalling death and suffering – not only to its intended victims, the Vietnamese people, but also the service personnel that used or even just came into contact with “Agent Orange”. Agent Orange is the code name for an herbicide and defoliant which was contaminated with TCDD and was used by the U.S. military in its herbicidal warfare program during the Vietnam War. This caused many people to die and many children to be born with defects.

This poem may remind us that wars aren’t over when the wars are over. Although the war had already ended for a long time, its impact and remains are still present now.He hopes to show and tell the readers about the devastating effects of war and probably to deter them from starting a war.

New Academic School Year

This year is 2010 and 2009 is gone. Holiday is over and this is the time to start work again (although it is already too late). This is year is going to be very different from last year, as this year is going to determine which program would we get into. So in order to get into my desired program, I know I must work very hard to fulfill my dream. So to begin, I must first eradicate some of my worst problems once and for all.

First of all, filing. In secondary 1 and primary school, I always had a big problem with filing. The main thing is that once I finished checking or marking a worksheet, I just chucked it into my locker and forget all about it. Then as time passes, the one or two worksheet in my locker stack up into a huge pile. And in the end, I couldn't find the worksheet required for filing and revising. Even if I am lucky enough to find it, it would either be torn of " disfigured". Hence, all the notes that I made on the worksheets area also gone and those are usually important points of the certain topic.

Next, procrastinating. Another headache. Every time I encountered a difficult problem or a huge task, I would always tell my parents " Ai ya, tomorrow also can do la. No need to worry. " However, the more I procrastinate, the more the task seemed impossible to finish. Then in the end, it was always that the assignment was not accomplished. This is a very serious problem as procrastinating is a "sin". ( sin found in the word procrastinate). So I hope to be able to get rid of this problem as promptness is very important.

Last but not least, it is the habit of not revising until examination time. At the start of every term last year, I would begin as if the whole term is meant for enjoyment. Games like " Mousehunt" , "Mafia Wars" would seem to be SUPER strong magnets and I a single iron filling. Hence, I would hook on to the computer checking what mouse I would catch next, who is fighting me, and how many time do I plan to level up today. The time wasted on all these games could be put to better use like doing CIP, ACE, etc.

All the above problems made me do not so well in my overall performance. That was the point of time when I really regret. So this year , I would get my files and ACE ideas as soon as possible, and I would remind my parent to remind me when I began to procrastinate.

Ok! That's all for this blog post! ^_^
